Anglo American is a global leader in the mining and natural resource sectors with interests in gold, platinum, diamonds, coal, base and ferrous metals, industrial minerals and paper and packaging. Anglo American is one of the largest private sector employers and investors in Africa. Of its 209,000 employees, 127,000 are resident in Africa, where the company has operated since 1917.

In June 2005, Anglo American received from UK's Business in the Community, the Oracle International Award for its contribution towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Africa.

governance and transparency

Anglo American has been an active participant in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative since its launch, with a representative on the EITI International Advisory Council. The company is also a corporate supporter of Transparency International. AngloGoldAshanti, an independently managed subsidiary of Anglo American, is involved in EITI processes in Ghana, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Read more

Anglo American plc announced in November 2005 a $2.5 million commitment to the creation of the NEPAD Investment Climate Facility (ICF).  Anglo American is one of the first corporate sponsors of the facility, support for which was proposed by the Commission for Africa and endorsed by the G8 at the Gleneagles Summit.  Read more

enterprise

Anglo American is a leader in local business development practices, including through an internationally recognised model in South Africa - Anglo Zimele - which at the end of 2004 was supporting over 2,000 jobs in 27 small firms.  The company also operates a range of other sustainable livelihoods initiatives including for example, a charcoal manufacturing inititiative in Kwa Zulu Natal which employs 450 people. Anglo American has played a leadership role in the private sector response to HIV/AIDS in Africa including implementing the largest directly delivered, private sector ART programme in the world.  Their Chairman holds the Chair of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS.  Read more
