Chambers of Commerce and Industry South Africa (CHAMSA)
Chambers of Commerce and Industry South Africa (CHAMSA), publicly launched in 2003 by South Africa’s State President Thabo Mbeki, is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation, and South Africa’s overall National Business Chamber. It is the independent non-governmental umbrella body of South Africa's four premier business chambers - the Afrikaanse Handels Instituut (AHI), Foundation for African Business and Consumer Services (FABCOS), National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NAFCOC), and South African Chamber of Business (SACOB). Institutionally, CHAMSA is a major step forward to unite South African business across all sectors of the economy.
Through the active involvement of its constituent members - AHI, FABCOS, NAFCOC and SACOB - CHAMSA endeavours to encapsulate the envisaged objectives and essence of representing business more effectively and progressively in the South African democratic landscape post 1994.
In 2004 CHAMSA was selected to host the Permanent Secretariat of the Association of SADC (Southern African Development Community) Chambers of Commerce and Industry, or ASCCI for short. Its membership comprises the National Chambers of Commerce and Industry spanning the countries making up this Community.
ASCCI is the main private sector representative body formally accredited for socio-political dialogue with the para-governmental SADC Secretariat.
