governance and transparency

Deloitte embraces corporate governance and the principles of good social responsibility. Deloitte aims to entrench good corporate governance by remaining committed to our Global Shared Values and our Ethical Principles.
• Input to all Party Parliamentary Africa Group on corruption and money laundering - we have an active forensics division looking into broad areas covering transparency and governance, country risk assessments, business intelligence services etc.
• Transparency in public financial management - APRM - we have also experience in contributing to the development of South Africa's public finance management act.

 

climate for business

Input to the Investment Climate Facility - we are already involved in providing thought leadership to the facility to DFID/NEPAD, and have provided legal and tax advice.
• Capacity Building on public sector capacity for PPPs - we have advised many Governments with PPPs
• Customs administration and cost of poor administration - we are already advising the ICF on tax issues, and write "tax alerts" for our clients

Growth in Africa reached 5.1% in 2004, the highest growth in eight years and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts higher growth next year of 5.3%.

For Africa to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), however it needs sustained growth of 7% per annum over the next 10 years. 

Deloitte Southern Africa has been working closely with the international donors and NEPAD in ways to bring the private sector into socio-and economic development on a commercially sustainable basis. Deloitte has assisted international donors to design risk and cost sharing projects that give the private sector return, but at the same time, demonstrate real social returns for the poor.

Deloitte also assists in the management of the Business Linkage Challenge Fund, which is financed by the British Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). In addition, on a pro bono basis, Deloitte is assisting NEPAD and DFID by providing thought leadership to their innovative and pioneering programme to enhance the investment climate in Africa.

Deloitte is committed to acting as an intermediary between donors and the private sector on a pro bono basis to lend support to the ICF.

Business action to improve world trading, advocacy for success at Doha - Our CEO Vassi Naidoo is an active member of the team of senior executives working with the German Marshall Fund's Trade and Poverty Forum, representing South Africa.  This is a forum which comprises senior executives from Brazil, India and South Africa; working with their counterparts in North America, Europe and Japan.  The aim is to use trade as a mechanism to eradicate poverty.

Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund - we have been managing the Business Linkages and Financial Deepening Challenge Funds for DFID over the last 4-5 years, and have provided thought leadership to DFID and the Commission for Africa on the establishment of the AECF and the Investment Climate Facility.

human development

Business action to combat HIV/AIDS - we have an active actuarial division advising clients on the effect of HIV/AIDS in the business place, and a number of other initiatives relating to HIV/AIDS strategy and processes for effective data collection for decision making.
